what changes in 2027
from January 1, 2027, every dog will cost the same: €120 per year, regardless of whether it's your first or third. for the first dog, this means an increase of €48 compared to today; for each additional dog, an increase of €15. those who own two dogs will pay €240 instead of €177 in the future.
the fee will be higher for dogs requiring a dog license according to § 5a of the Vienna Animal Keeping Act, provided that ownership is newly established or changes from 2027: then it will be €240 per year. These include, among others, Rottweilers, Pit Bull Terriers, Dogo Argentino, Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Mastino Napoletano, Mastín Español, Fila Brasileiro, Mastiff, Bullmastiff, and Tosa Inu.

exemption and reduction: who pays less
shelter dog from Vienna
if you adopted your dog from a shelter in the Vienna city area from January 1, 2023, you are completely exempt from the fee for the first three calendar years.
dog license (certified city dog)
if your dog has passed the voluntary dog license, the following year is exempt from fees. the exemption applies once per dog and can be combined with the shelter exemption — together, this can result in up to four years of exemption. it is not applicable if you have completed the mandatory dog license or one ordered by authorities.
mobilpass
with a valid Mobilpass — for example, with minimum income support or a low pension — you receive a 50% subsidy for a maximum of one dog. For this, you need the Mobilpass and a photo ID.
guard dog in agriculture or forestry
for guard dogs in an agricultural or forestry business, there is a reduction of €36.
completely exempt
no fee is paid by owners of guide dogs for the blind, assistance dogs to compensate for a disability, therapy dogs, and rescue dogs. animal welfare organizations for dogs used for organizational purposes and commercially registered animal dealers are also exempt.
dog predominantly in another municipality
if you keep the dog predominantly in another Austrian municipality and pay a fee there, this amount will be credited in Vienna. You will then only pay the difference. For this, you send the payment receipt to accounting department 40.
registering a dog in Vienna: deadlines and obligations
you must register your dog within 14 days of it turning three months old or being brought to Vienna. You should also state any reasons for exemption at the same time. You will need the dog's microchip number for registration.
you will receive the official notification along with the payment details annually in March by post, payable by the end of April. if you register later than April 30, the date will be on the payment details.
two obligations that are often overlooked: you need liability insurance of at least €725,000 (§ 5 para. 11 of the Vienna Animal Keeping Act), otherwise, administrative penal proceedings may be initiated. and the microchip number must be registered in the pet database within one month of acquisition.
