between sunset and darkness lies civil twilight - the time when the sun is up to six degrees below the horizon. in Austria, it lasts about 32 to 36 minutes in autumn. during this phase, you can recognize shapes, contours, and the path, but no longer details on the ground.

the calculator therefore distinguishes three states instead of two: light (sun above the horizon), twilight (sun below the horizon, but less than six degrees), and dark (after that). an evening walk at 5:30 PM in October can therefore be both "after sunset" and still easily walkable - or not.

in the city, street lighting is added. it helps on the sidewalk and usually ends exactly where the dog wants to go: in the grass, behind the bushes, in the dog zone.

what daylight saving time does

in autumn, the clock is set back by one hour on the night of the last Sunday in October. this causes sunset to jump forward by exactly one hour overnight. an evening walk that was still in the light on Saturday will be in the dark on Sunday - not gradually over weeks, but from one day to the next.

in spring, the same thing happens in reverse, on the last Sunday in March. in between are the dark months.

the real problem in the dark is not the path, but the moment you pick something up from the ground. a cell phone flashlight means: phone in one hand, leash in the other, bag in the third. that doesn't exist.

that depends on your time. a walk at 5:30 PM in Vienna is light until October and then without daylight until February. a walk at 4:00 PM remains light almost all year round, one at 7:00 PM is already dark from September. the calculator above gives you the date for your time.

why does it suddenly get dark an hour earlier on one day?

that's daylight saving time on the last Sunday in October. the clock goes back an hour, and so does sunset. for evening walks between about 4:30 PM and 6:00 PM, this is the day the dark season begins - without transition.

is sunset already dark?

no. after that follows civil twilight of a good half hour, during which one can still manage without light. only after that is it dark in the sense of the calculator. the three states are next to each other in the bands above.

on how many days a year is a dog walk dark?

for a fixed evening walk at 5:30 PM in Vienna, there are about 100 days without daylight plus about 20 days in twilight. morning walks are milder because sunrise shifts less than sunset. the calculator calculates it for your times.

is there a requirement for dogs to be illuminated in Austria?

there is no explicit obligation to illuminate the dog. However, § 5 para. 1 of the Vienna Dog Ownership Act requires that the dog remains controllable in public places at all times - in the dark, this is more difficult to fulfill without a view of the dog. reflectors and lights are therefore a matter of safety and liability, not regulation.

how accurate are the times?

calculations are made according to the standard procedure for sun positions, with the coordinates of the respective city and the refraction of light in the atmosphere. the deviation is one to two minutes. mountains, houses, and weather shift the perceived value more strongly than the calculation - in the west of Austria, the sun sets significantly earlier behind the mountain ridge than calculated.
